The centre of Sunart is Strontian village with its associated townships
of Ardnastaing, Anaheilt, Ariundle and Scotstown. It extends from
Glen Tarbert westwards to the Salen Burn, and northwards to Loch
Shiel, including the townships of Polloch and Glenhurich.
Strontian is world famous because it gives its name to the element
Strontium. This element was first isolated from ore produced by
the Strontian Lead Mines high on the hill above Strontian next
to the Polloch road. Although the mines are largely derelict and
there are some dangerous holes, most of the area is safe and accessible
and you may well find good examples of mineral crystals such as
lead sulphide or galena.
Strontian is the centre of the extensive forestry activity in West
Ardnamurchan. The whole area is the subject of a major regeneration
programme involving the removal of introduced conifers and allowing
the natural forest of oak, birches, hazel and ash to become re-established.
As you go westwards from Strontian, take a stop at the Ard Airigh
Picnic Site and walk along the path to the new hide. You will certainly
see herons and sea birds, but there is also a good chance of seeing
an otter, read some of the notes left by other visitors.
